Its main goal is to achieve self-reliance and ensure sustainable development through the proper use of national resources in the post-disaster period, including reducing loss of life and property due to disasters. Its main functions are: Formulating disaster preparedness at the disaster-prone district, upazila and union levels; Continuing training and action plans on disaster management to increase public awareness; Coordination of overall disaster management activities; collection of disaster-related information and development of a data repository and acting as an expert office of the government on disasters, etc.
As the head of the bureau, a Director General has the power to make all decisions under the direct administrative control of the ministry. Foreign and local consultants and four directors assist him in decision-making. The expenses of the Disaster Management Bureau are financed from the revenue budget of the Government of Bangladesh and financial assistance from UNDP and UNICEF.
The bureau does not have its own organizational structure or structure at the field level; activities are carried out with the assistance of the Deputy Commissioner, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer and Upazila Project Implementation Officer and Union Parishad Chairman at the district, upazila and union levels.
